Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course (Age 15+)
Course Overview:
This American Red Cross course prepares candidates to teach swimming and water safety by developing instructional skills, class management techniques, and participant evaluation strategies.
Course Objectives:
Participants will learn to:
- Plan and conduct effective, safe swim lessons
- Observe and assess swim skills and provide feedback
- Communicate progress and adapt instruction for diverse learners
- Handle unexpected challenges and manage behavior
Prerequisites:
- Must be 15 years old by the final class session
- Demonstrate the following swim skills:
- 25 yards: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke
- 15 yards: butterfly
- Float/scull on back for 1 minute in deep water
- Tread water for 1 minute
Certification Requirements:
- Complete precourse session and online orientation
- Attend all course sessions (in-person and online)
- Complete practice-teaching assignments
- Score 80% or higher on the written exam
Blended Learning
Course material is delivery in combination of online learning, lecture, discussion, practice teaching assignments, in water assessments and written exam.
Participants will have online assignments prior to the first class. This will including accessing to American Red Center Learning Center online.
