Course Overview:
This American Red Cross course trains participants to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and provide professional care for breathing, cardiac, and first aid emergencies until EMS arrives.
Prerequisites:
- Must be 15 years old by the final class date.
- Pass two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:
- Swim-tread-swim without rest:
- 150-yard swim (front crawl/breaststroke), 2-minute tread (legs only), 50-yard swim. Goggles allowed.
- Timed event (1 min 40 sec max):
- 20-yard swim, retrieve 10-lb object from 7–10 ft depth, return on back holding object, exit without ladder. Goggles not allowed.
Certification Requirements:
- Complete all online and in-person components.
- Participate fully and demonstrate skill proficiency.
- Pass written exam (min. 80%) and three final assessments:
- Timed rescue scenario with CPR.
- Lifeguard station rotation and surveillance.
- Team response with CPR, AED, and BVM use.
Certification:
Upon completion, participants earn a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid.
To renew, lifeguards must complete a recertification course before expiration. A 30-day grace period may apply but does not extend certification.
Blended Learning
- Course Length: Minimum of 28 hours
- Two weeks prior to first class, participants will receive a link to online learning.
- The online session for the Lifeguarding course has 16 modules and takes approximately 6 hours to complete all modules of the online session. Each individual module takes approximately 15 – 30 minutes to complete.
- All online learning must be completed prior to the first class to participate.
- Classes will be conducted in the pool, pool deck and conference room. Course material will be delivery through lecture, video, discussion and hands-on skills in and out of the water.
- Please Be Aware: This course will be a quick moving class with limited practice time. Please review your course material and practice your in water skills outside of class time. Please come prepared to class and ask questions.
